HBO is producing a four-episode crime drama titled ‘Melania Rea – Oltre il caso’, directed by Stefano Mordini. The series reconstructs the 2011 murder of Melania Rea, whose body was found in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Starring Maria Esposito as Melania Rea and Daniele Rienzo as her husband, Salvatore Parolisi, the production utilizes trial documents, testimonies from the victim’s family, and accounts from investigators to depict the judicial proceedings and Parolisi’s conviction. The series aims to explore themes of domestic abuse, control, and gender-based violence. Following its presentation at the Rome Film Festival, where it was showcased in the Freestyle | Serie section, the series is scheduled to debut on HBO Max on November 6, 2026, with weekly episode releases. The production seeks to move beyond legal proceedings to explore the personal life, aspirations, and domestic dynamics of the victim. To ensure a sensitive portrayal, creators collaborated with the Rea family, legal experts, and criminologists. Actress Maria Esposito stated her goal was to portray Rea as a person with a life and a family before the violence occurred. Supported by the Fondazione Una Nessuna Centomila, the series also examines the social mechanisms that allow such violence to persist.
