Neil Druckmann, creator of the original ‘The Last of Us’ video game, has confirmed his departure from the creative direction of the HBO television series. Druckmann stated that neither he nor Naughty Dog had creative involvement in the production of the third season, as he has returned to the studio to focus on a new science fiction title, ‘Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet’. Craig Mazin remains the sole showrunner. Regarding the series' conclusion, HBO and Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has indicated that the third season may be the final installment. Speaking to Deadline during an Emmys afterparty, Bloys stated, “I think [showrunner] Craig [Mazin] has planned it as the final season.” These comments contrast with previous statements from Mazin, who suggested in May 2025 that a fourth season might be necessary to fully complete the narrative. While the first season received critical acclaim, the second season drew mixed reactions from some viewers and critics concerning its adaptation of the source material. Production for the third season began in March and is expected to conclude in November, with a projected release in 2027. The upcoming season is expected to focus on the character Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, continuing the story following the events of the second season.
