In late July 2026, HD Hyundai Samho signed a contract with Washington United Terminals to supply four new port cranes for the Port of Tacoma. Slated for delivery by 2028, the project aims to increase annual handling capacity to roughly 880,000 TEU, supporting larger ships and aligning with the Make American Shipbuilding Great Again (MASGA) effort to replace Chinese-origin equipment. Simultaneously, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering partnered with Siemens Digital Industries Software to launch an AI-driven marine platform to unify ship design, production, and maintenance. Expanding its U.S. footprint, HD Hyundai signed an MOU with Fraser Industries to modernize the historic Wisconsin shipyard using robotics, automation, and AI-based digital management. Attended by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-gwan, the project aims to turn the Fraser yard into a “test model for reviving U.S. shipbuilding.” Fraser CEO Patrick Kelly noted the partnership would “leapfrog” the yard to modern production technologies. Furthering automation efforts, HII and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries launched a pilot program at the Ingalls Shipbuilding yard in Mississippi. This initiative introduces intelligent mechanized welding equipment to automate warship construction areas that traditionally relied on manual labor. The systems are designed to recognize workpieces, correct positions in real time, and capture data for quality control, addressing workforce shortages and schedule delays in American naval shipbuilding programs. By August 2026, HD Hyundai entered advanced negotiations to acquire a U.S. shipyard, potentially targeting locations in San Diego or along the Texas coast. This strategic move aims to meet MASGA requirements for local investment or majority domestic stakes to participate in U.S. warship construction. To facilitate these efforts, the company established ‘HD Hyundai USA’ and secured support from Cerberus Capital Management.
