Health impacts of adolescent substance use
Overview
Research has increasingly linked substance use during adolescence and early adulthood to long-term physical and cognitive health complications.
Initial findings from a study of over 16,000 individuals in the United States suggest that heavy substance use—including alcohol, smoking, and cannabis—between the ages of 18 and 30 is correlated with memory impairment by middle or older age. Additionally, orthopedic experts note that alcohol consumption during formative years can undermine skeletal resilience, potentially increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures by interfering with bone cell development.
Subsequent preclinical research from Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine has provided more specific biological insights. Using animal models, scientists observed that excessive alcohol consumption during adolescence causes lasting changes to the hippocampus, a brain region vital for learning and memory. The study found that alcohol disrupts communication between astrocytes and synapses, with alterations remaining detectable even after long periods of abstinence. These neurological changes were also linked to altered fear-related behaviors in adulthood.
