Research conducted in the United States has highlighted significant health risks associated with meal timing. An initial study presented at Digestive Disease Week 2026 found that consuming more than 25% of daily calories after 9:00 p.m., especially when combined with chronic stress, can increase the risk of intestinal disorders like diarrhea or constipation by up to 150%. This group also showed lower gut microbiota diversity, with researchers noting that late-night eating can have a “doubly negative impact” on gut health when stress is present. Subsequent findings published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition expanded on these risks, linking meal timing to broader mortality and life expectancy concerns. Analyzing Nutrition, involving analysis of data from over 31,000 American adults aged 40 and older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999–2018), researchers observed that eating expanded on these risks. Researchers identified a link between meal timing and broader mortality and life expectancy concerns, a field known as chrononutrition. Regarding the first meal of the day day, using a 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. window as a reference, eating between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. increased all-cause mortality by 10%, while eating between 10:00 a.m. and noon increased risk by 19%. Consuming the first meal after noon was associated with a 29% higher risk of death from any cause and a 46% higher risk of cardiovascular death compared to those eating between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. death. For those aged 50 or older, this pattern was linked to a reduction in life expectancy of approximately 2.5 years. Regarding the final meal of the day, eating after midnight was associated with a 27% increase in general mortality and a 51% increase in cardiovascular deaths. For participants aged 50 and older, this late-night pattern was linked to a 2.4-year decrease in life expectancy. Further analysis of the breakfast window revealed a progressive increase in risk: eating the first meal between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. increased all-cause mortality by 10%, rising to 19% for those eating between 10:00 a.m. and noon. Researchers noted that as an observational study, the findings identify correlations rather than proving that meal timing directly causes earlier death.
