Health impacts of smoking research

Medical research has highlighted the multifaceted health risks of smoking, encompassing both physical and psychosocial impacts. While smoking is linked to approximately 85% of lung cancer cases, studies note that non-smokers also face risks from secondhand smoke, pollution, and occupational exposure.

Recent findings presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress, based on data from over 50,000 individuals across 15 European countries, establish a connection between smoking and increased loneliness. Using the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) and the UCLA loneliness scale, researchers observed that active smokers reported more intense feelings of loneliness and experienced a faster increase in these feelings over a two-year period compared to non-smokers.

Lead researcher Dr. Keir Philip, a clinical lecturer in respiratory medicine at Imperial College London, stated that these findings “debunk the myth that smoking is a social activity.” Experts suggest the correlation may stem from nicotine dependence acting as a substitute for social interaction or smoking-related illnesses limiting social mobility.
