Scientific research is increasingly challenging the perception that electronic cigarettes are a safer alternative to traditional tobacco. Initial studies involving human participants suggested that vaping may cause more significant lung function impairment than conventional smoking. Researchers observed early signs of airway obstruction in young, healthy individuals, noting that these changes can occur “early and silently.” Subsequent preclinical research involving human cells and animal models expanded on these risks, demonstrating that e-cigarette vapor can weaken the barrier function of airway tissues and small blood vessels. These studies observed cellular stress, reduced cell multiplication, and impaired autophagy. In animal models, molecular signals of tissue remodeling persisted for ten days following exposure. Recent research led by National Jewish Health, published in JCI Insight, has further characterized this damage, indicating that e-cigarette vapor can harm delicate lung tissues within just 24 hours of exposure. By analyzing human pulmonary epithelial and endothelial cells, as well as distal lung tissue, researchers found that vapor compromises the protective barrier of the distal lung and impairs mechanisms responsible for removing damaged cellular components. Lead researcher Irina Petrache noted that “significant changes in lung tissue and blood can be observed shortly after the first inhalation.” The study highlighted that such damage can persist for up to 10 days after a single exposure, potentially leaving the lungs more vulnerable to viral infections. These findings have prompted continue to drive discussions regarding public health risks and potential legal implications concerning the perceived reduced harm of vaping products.
