On 7 August 2026, King Harald V of Norway, aged 89, visited Rikshospitalet in Oslo for a scheduled medical examination. Royal communications chief Guri Varpe clarified that the monarch drove himself to the hospital for the appointment with his personal physician, rather than being transported by ambulance. By 17 August 2026, the Norwegian Royal Court reported that the King had been hospitalized following the examination. The hospitalization was attributed to fluid accumulation caused by cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia, a blood deficiency the monarch has been receiving treatment for over recent weeks. The condition involves red blood cells being destroyed more rapidly than they can be replaced. He is currently being treated with antibiotics for a bacterial infection in his blood.
