Healthcare capacity challenges in Westallgäu

The Westallgäu region in Germany is facing significant pressure on its healthcare infrastructure due to rising patient volumes and the closure of local medical facilities.

In July 2026, the Westallgäu Klinik in Wangen recorded a historic high of 100 emergency patients in a single 24-hour period. This surge is part of a long-term trend where emergency visits increased by 58% between 2021 and 2025. Hospital officials attribute this growth to the closures of emergency departments in Bad Waldsee, Lindenberg, and Tettnang, which have shifted the patient load to the Wangen facility.

In response to these shortages and the closure of the Rotkreuzklinik Lindenberg, several municipalities are forming a medical cooperative to establish the Medical Service Center (MVZ) Westallgäu. This initiative aims to secure long-term outpatient care. As of August 2026, municipalities including Lindenberg, Heimenkirch, Scheidegg, and Weiler have joined the cooperative, with several others expressing intent to participate to stabilize regional healthcare.
