Overview
The municipality of Santo Stefano del Sole is experiencing a socio-sanitary emergency caused by a total lack of general practitioners. This shortage affects approximately 2,100 residents, many of whom are elderly citizens with chronic conditions.
Mayor Gerardo Santoli has characterized the situation as ‘unacceptable’ and a violation of the constitutional right to health. The absence of primary medical coverage prevents residents from renewing therapeutic plans, obtaining life-saving prescriptions, or receiving home visits. Consequently, vulnerable citizens are being forced to rely on hospital emergency services or travel to neighboring towns for care.
In response, the Mayor has issued an urgent appeal to the Ministry of Health, the Campania Region Health Department, and the ASL of Avellino. He is demanding the implementation of extraordinary measures, such as temporary aggregations or provisional assignments, to restore essential medical services to the community.
