The University Clinical Center (UKC) of Republika Srpska has highlighted advancements in oncology services and medical cooperation. In late August 2026, a Serbian health delegation visited the facility in Banja Luka to inspect specialized departments, including nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, and a new oncology and palliative care facility. During this visit, Republika Srpska Minister of Health Alen Šeranić announced an additional 15 million KM allocation for an oncology drug program and the establishment of a Center for Rare Diseases. Following these institutional developments, the UKC demonstrated its surgical capabilities in early September 2026 by successfully performing a complex operation to remove a large tumor from a patient’s axillary region. The procedure, led by orthopedic oncology specialist Dr. Slaviša Kunarac, required high precision to preserve critical blood vessels and nerve structures. On September 17, 2026, the UKC expanded its orthopedic and traumatology services by establishing a specialized Spinal Department. This new department provides 24-hour availability of spinal surgeons to manage urgent cases, severe spinal cord injuries, degenerative diseases, and spinal tumors. Medical staff are utilizing minimally invasive procedures, such as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, to promote faster recovery. Nikola Šobot, acting general director of UKC Republika Srpska, stated that the clinic is evolving from robotic surgery toward advanced spinal surgery techniques. On September 20, 2026, the UKC announced an expanded partnership with the Hospital ‘Sveti arhiđakon Stefan – 9. januar’ in Trebinje. This collaboration focuses on neurosurgery, orthopedics, and cardiology. To address personnel shortages, the partnership includes a joint project to construct housing for young doctors and essential medical staff in both Trebinje and Banja Luka. Additionally, Šobot announced the upcoming opening of 550 new parking spaces at the UKC garage to alleviate congestion in Banja Luka.
