Healthcare initiatives in Nigeria have focused on expanding medical coverage and service delivery through insurance enrollment, free medical outreach, and strategic partnerships. In Lagos State, efforts included insurance enrollment and free medical services in Ikorodu, where the iCare Foundation provided dental, optometry, and general medical checks to promote the early detection of conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. In Ondo State, the government partnered with the Lifespring Development Foundation to manage healthcare commodities. This initiative aims to prevent shortages of sexual and reproductive health supplies, including maternal and child health resources, across several local government areas. Building on these efforts, Lagos State has launched a new phase of health reforms aimed at achieving universal health coverage. Following an executive order to domesticate the National Health Insurance Authority Act, the state is shifting focus from isolated projects toward building enduring institutions for affordable and accessible care. Currently, over 1.5 million residents are enrolled in the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme. To improve accessibility, the government introduced the Ilera Eko EasyPay platform, which allows for installment premium payments. Additional mechanisms include an Equity Fund to finance premiums for vulnerable citizens and an assistance program designed to ensure emergency patients receive immediate treatment regardless of their immediate ability to pay. This mobile service provides general consultations, telemedicine, laboratory investigations, and drug dispensing as a temporary measure until a permanent Primary Healthcare Centre is established. Additionally, outreach programs in Somolu have provided free screenings for conditions such as high cholesterol, prostate cancer, and mental health issues, while assisting residents with health insurance enrollment.
