The Provincial Health Authority (ASP) of Crotone has initiated steps to centralize regional medical services. The authority acquired services by acquiring the former Datel building for approximately 856,000 euros to establish the ‘Cittadella della Salute’ (Health Citadel). This technological and managerial hub aims to reduce fragmentation and improve fiscal efficiency by eliminating annual rental costs for disconnected buildings. Parallel to this acquisition, this, a larger 300 million euro hospital complex project is under discussion. This project involves development through a national funding agreement between involving the State, the Calabria Region, and Inail. While Under this arrangement, Inail provides the project is intended to serve as initial capital, which the Calabria Region will repay at a high-level healthcare hub, subsidized rate to eventually gain ownership of the facility. The project requires several administrative stages, including the preparation of an executive project by the Region and the Asp di Crotone for Inail’s evaluation. The ‘Diritto alla salute’ citizen committee has called for increased transparency. The committee transparency, specifically raised concerns regarding the selection of emphasizing that the urban site, noting it site selected by the Municipality of Crotone must be free from archaeological or hydrogeological constraints. To support these infrastructure goals, Antonio Graziano, Director General of the Asp in Crotone, has outlined a strategy to reduce ‘passive health mobility.’ By improving the local hospital’s attractiveness and expanding specialist offerings—such as hemodynamics, which is already attracting outside patients—Graziano aims to decrease spending on medical services performed outside the province. The intention is to reinvest the funds saved from these external medical expenses into upgrading local technology and medical training.
