Heart Aerospace successfully completed the first piloted flight of its X1 demonstrator, a full-scale battery-electric aircraft, at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York. The 27-minute flight reached an altitude of approximately 1,100 feet 335 meters (1,100 feet) and utilized a propulsion system delivering over one megawatt of power. The X1, which has a wingspan of about 32 meters (106 feet) and a takeoff weight exceeding 11 tons (25,000 pounds), serves as a technology validator for the company’s upcoming ES-30. Heart Aerospace noted the high efficiency of the flight, stating that the electricity required to lift the plane cost only about ‘5 dollars (or 50 SEK)’. The ES-30 is a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner designed to fly carry up to 36 passengers. It will utilize a hybrid-electric system to achieve an operational range of approximately 800 kilometers, compared to 200 kilometers on battery power or 800 kilometers using a pure electric power. This hybrid system. approach is intended to provide necessary energy reserves for safety and diversions. Heart Aerospace intends to begin flight testing a pre-prototype of the ES-30 in 2028, with a target for commercial entry into service by 2031. The company aims to reduce aviation costs and emissions by targeting the regional travel market, specifically the 50 to 500-mile flight segment. Air Canada has already placed an order for 30 units of the ES-30.
