Extreme heat and rising water temperatures have triggered significant fish mortality events across multiple regions. In Minnesota, the Department of Natural Resources reported a surge in fish deaths across numerous lakes and river sections. This mortality, affecting species such as northern pike, walleye, and cisco, is attributed to high surface water temperatures, accelerated algae growth, and low dissolved oxygen levels caused by prolonged heat and nutrient runoff. In France, heatwaves and drought have caused widespread environmental distress. In the Meuse region, fishing has been prohibited at the Franchot ponds in Ancerville since late June due to critical water level drops and thermal stress. Site manager Daniel Bayette noted that the ponds have turned green with duckweed, which prevents photosynthesis and further depletes oxygen levels. In the Côtes-d'Armor region, approximately 100 kilograms of dead fish were discovered at the Trévé pond near Loudéac; officials attributed the die-off to oxygen depletion as temperatures reached 24-25°C, which is fatal to species like trout. In Central Europe, similar patterns have emerged in rivers. In Villmergen, Switzerland, the Hinterbach stream has almost completely dried up, leading to deaths among species including burbot. Local fishing tenant Rudolf Jost reported that the remaining water has become too warm and lacks sufficient oxygen. To mitigate further losses, authorities and volunteers have used electrofishing to relocate remaining trout to the Erusbach. In Germany, high temperatures exceeding 24°C in the Neckar river near Starzach-Sulzau have caused the deaths of numerous eels and trout. Fishermen report Local fisherman Frank Schmitt noted that heat-fueled algae growth is depleting oxygen, noting that eels are particularly vulnerable to oxygen deprivation and diseases like ‘red disease’ in warmer conditions.
