Heatwave impacts on safety, health, and economy in Slovenia

Extreme summer heatwaves in Slovenia have prompted various public health and safety responses across different sectors.

The Slovenian Ministry of Economy, Labour and Sport has focused on occupational safety, emphasizing the protection of outdoor workers. The Ministry is utilizing professional guides and weather warnings to help employers comply with health regulations, noting that further legislative updates may be considered if heatwaves persist.

Concurrently, the National Institute of Public Health has issued warnings regarding food safety, advising the public on temperature risks to prevent bacterial growth during outdoor activities. Additionally, the event planning industry has had to adapt to the heat, prioritizing shade, air conditioning, and adjusted scheduling to ensure the well-being of attendees during summer celebrations.

By August 2026, the heat has caused significant shifts in energy consumption and tourism. Data indicates that cooling degree days (CDD) between June 1 and August 10 reached an average of 83.9, which is 67 percent higher than the 2022 record and 2.4 times the five-year average. This increased heat load suggests higher potential costs for home cooling in cities such as Ljubljana, Maribor, and Celje, with Nova Gorica seeing a 62 percent rise in CDD compared to its 2022 record.

Simultaneously, the extreme heat is driving a surge in tourism within the Julian Alps region. Tourism hubs including Bled, Bohinj, and Kranjska Gora are reporting an exceptionally strong season. According to Blaž Veber, director of Turizem Bled, the Alps now account for nearly 40 percent of all visits to Slovenia, up from approximately 30 percent in previous years.
