Heatwave stress on European birds

A July 2026 study in southwestern Iberia examined Great tits exposed to four simulated heatwaves, finding that repeated extreme temperatures raised baseline body temperatures and caused oxidative and morphological stress. Researchers highlighted the birds' limited cooling mechanisms and recommended gardeners provide shade, water, bathing sites and dense vegetation to mitigate overheating and mortality.

A week later, experts in Greece warned that urban bird populations face similar heat‑related threats. They identified the most vulnerable groups—nestlings, fledglings, small passerines, breeding adults and sick individuals—and urged citizens to supply clean shallow water in shaded areas, preserve vegetation, avoid disturbing nests, and limit additional pressures such as free‑roaming cats. The advice extended the Iberian findings to a broader European urban context, emphasizing community actions to protect birds during increasingly frequent summer heatwaves.
