Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms continue to cause significant flooding and landslides across Turkey’s Black Sea region, with Rize, Trabzon, and Artvin facing the most severe impacts. In Rize’s İyidere district, precipitation levels have escalated, with Governor İhsan Selim Baydaş reporting that some areas received up to 186 kg per square meter, describing the event as the province’s “largest disaster of the year.” These downpours have triggered landslides that have impacted tea plantations, blocked drainage systems, and caused mud and water to inundate town centers. In the Pazar district, a landslide struck a two-story home, trapping a family of six who were eventually rescued through a window. In the Derepazarı district, approximately 50 landslides were reported, affecting eight neighborhoods and necessitating the evacuation of several homes as a precaution. Recent reports from Pazar indicate that over 200 kilograms of rain per square meter fell within a 12-hour period, leading to the precautionary evacuation of approximately 40 homes due to landslide risks. In the İyidere district, specifically in the Fıçıtaşı neighborhood, heavy flooding caused a road to collapse by approximately 60 centimeters. In Trabzon, rainfall of approximately 50 kg per square meter has flooded city centers, residential basements, and the airport access road. While property, infrastructure, and agricultural damage is significant—including reports of over 2,000 decares of tea gardens being affected—no fatalities have been confirmed. Damage assessment teams from AFAD and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change are currently on-site to evaluate the destruction to roads, utilities, and businesses. As of late September, the financial impact in Rize has escalated, with estimated damages reaching 1 billion 42 million lira. The heavy precipitation primarily impacted the coastal districts of İyidere, Pazar, Derepazarı, Ardeşen, and Tunca.
