Record-breaking torrential rainfall in Chiba Prefecture has caused widespread flooding, landslides, and significant infrastructure damage. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued Level 5 emergency warnings for several municipalities as rainfall intensities exceeded 100mm per hour. This period has become the wettest August in Chiba in sixty years, with some areas recording rainfall levels triple the monthly average. The disaster has resulted in a rising death toll, now reported at at least 10 fatalities, with one person remaining missing. Emergency services have reported approximately 30 injuries, with two individuals in serious condition. Property damage is extensive; approximately 1,300 homes have been submerged, and dozens of houses were partially or fully destroyed. At Narita International Airport, thousands of passengers were stranded due to the suspension of train and bus services. Railway services continue to face significant interruptions across several JR East lines, including the Uchibo, Sotobo, Kururi, and Togane lines. While the Japan Meteorological Agency has lowered some landslide warnings, officials noted that rainfall levels reached unprecedented heights, including 348 liters per square meter in 12 hours, surpassing previous records set in 2013.
