In mid-August, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms were forecasted for the Indian states of Bihar and Jharkhand. In Jharkhand, the India Meteorological Department issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall, warning of potential lightning strikes and strong winds between 30 and 40 km/h. By the end of August, weather volatility in Jharkhand intensified. Authorities issued a ‘red’ alert for very heavy rain in Garhwa, Palamu, Simdega, and West Singhbhum, alongside an orange alert for several other districts. The region faced low to moderate flash flood risks across multiple watersheds. Heavy rainfall was expected to persist through September 5, contributing to a narrowing of the state’s cumulative rainfall deficit to 6 per cent. As of early September, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended weather alerts through September 10, predicting continued rainfall and thunderstorms across the state. Specific warnings issued for September 8 include lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 50 km/h, with a heavy rainfall alert specifically scheduled for September 9. Twelve districts, including Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dumka, Palamu, Gumla, Chatra, Deoghar, Godda, Hazaribagh, Seraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum, and Bokaro, are under alert for thunderstorms and wind. Temperature fluctuations are also expected, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 36°C in some areas, while minimum temperatures may drop to 20°C in Letehar. Residents have been advised to avoid open fields, trees, and electric poles during lightning activity.
