Heino dispute over gendered language in TV production

Overview

German singer Heino has threatened to withdraw from the Austrian mockumentary series ‘Die Rettungsschwimmer vom Wörthersee’ due to the use of gender-inclusive language in the project’s working title.

The 87-year-old entertainer expressed opposition to gendered terminology, stating that it ‘disfigures our beautiful German language’. The dispute arose when production documents and schedules utilized the gendered version, ‘Die Rettungsschwimmer:innen vom Wörthersee’, rather than the original title.

Heino has issued an ultimatum through his manager, demanding a return to the original title. He has threatened to refuse further filming, decline to perform the theme song, and insist that his previously filmed scenes be excluded from the final production if the gendered title is finalized. While producer Stefanie Mayer noted the title was a working version intended to represent women and queer individuals, the conflict persists as the gendered term has reappeared in production schedules.
