Helicobacter pylori and cancer risk association

Overview

Research has increasingly linked the bacterium Helicobacter pylori to various gastrointestinal cancers. An exploratory meta-analysis involving nearly 49 million people suggested that exposure to the bacterium may be associated with approximately one in five bowel cancer cases globally, with a 1.6-fold higher risk compared to unexposed individuals. This study noted that the estimated proportion of bowel cancer cases linked to H. pylori appeared to be rising in younger generations.

Subsequent analysis published in The Lancet Oncology identified H. pylori as a major infectious agent for cancer. In 2024, the bacteria was associated with approximately 760,000 cases, primarily gastric cancer. Experts noted that H. pylori infects the stomach mucosa and can remain asymptomatic for decades, potentially leading to ulcers, gastritis, and fatal gastric cancer by stimulating excessive acid production. While standard antibiotic and proton pump inhibitor treatments are successful in 70% to 90% of cases, they can be costly and cause side effects.

Helicobacter pylori linked to high rates of gastric cancer

Helicobacter pylori is a major driver of gastric cancer globally. Often asymptomatic for decades, the bacteria is linked to 760,000 cancer cases in 2024 and remains a significant preventable health risk.

    H. pylori exposure linked to one in five bowel cancer cases

A large-scale study suggests H. pylori exposure may be linked to 22% of bowel cancer cases globally, with a higher risk observed in younger generations and specific regions.
