Arrowhead Game Studios released a trailer titled “Face the Unknown” to tease an upcoming update for Helldivers 2. The footage featured shadowy figures, alien ruins, and mysterious energy effects, leading to community speculation that the Illuminate faction would return as a new adversary. One teaser specifically showed a plush teddy bear in Helldiver armor being torn apart in a violet, weightless chamber, which viewers interpreted as a sign of the Illuminate's return. On 12 August, the “Devoid of Liberty” update was officially released. This update introduced the “Void” frontier, which includes mutated environments and the return of the Illuminate faction. New gameplay elements include mission types such as destroying spires and gateways, as well as new enemies like the “Wretch” and the “Crusher.” The update also added the SEAF (Super Earth Armed Forces) squad, a group of specialized NPCs designed to provide tactical support and healing. Alongside this content release, Helldivers 2 became available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe members via the Game Catalog.
