In early October 2026, the Heraklion Port Organization (OLI) and the Heraklion International Airport (DAIK) signed a Memorandum of Strategic Cooperation. The agreement intends to integrate the port and airport into a single transport and tourism ecosystem to improve connectivity, cruise services, and supply chain management in Crete. By mid-October, the Heraklion International Airport expanded its collaborative efforts by signing a memorandum with OFYPEKA. This agreement, signed at the construction site of the new Kastelli airport, focuses on promoting Crete’s biodiversity and natural wealth. The initiative aims to integrate environmental awareness and sustainable development into the visitor experience, incorporating educational components for local students and research institutions. During a visit to Heraklion, Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou reinforced Crete’s strategic role as an energy and tourism hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition to He highlighted critical infrastructure developments, including the airport-OFYPEKA partnership, electrical interconnection between Crete and Attica, the completion of the BOUAK road, and upcoming seismic surveys by Chevron in the Ionian Sea starting in 2026. Additionally, the Minister inaugurated a renovated permanent exhibition at the Crete Natural History Museum. This 5.7 million euro upgrade, funded via the ‘Greece 2.0’ national plan and the European Union’s NextGenerationEU, is designed to connect scientific knowledge with the public by showcasing the island’s geological history and unique ecosystems.
