Heritage fruit variety preservation in Germany
Overview
Efforts to preserve and distribute heritage fruit varieties are progressing in Germany through both large-scale conservation projects and individual horticultural techniques.
In the Alpine foothills, the ‘Apfel-Birne-Berge’ project has worked since 2015 to locate and preserve forgotten apple and pear varieties. These rediscovered trees are now available for purchase through various nurseries. A central ‘orchard variety ark’ in Wessobrunn preserves approximately 85 selected varieties to maintain biodiversity.
Complementing these conservation efforts, individual gardeners are using grafting to maintain multiple historical and regional varieties on single trees. In Rendsburg, a ‘100-sort tree’ has been developed by grafting various branches onto one trunk, while in Oberviechtach, a tree carrying 28 different apple varieties has been cultivated over a 25-year period.
