Hermeus aerospace technology and manufacturing developments

Overview

Aerospace startup Hermeus has introduced several developments regarding its high-speed flight technologies and manufacturing capabilities.

The company unveiled Ramjet-X, an expendable ramjet-powered vehicle intended to reduce costs for high-Mach airbreathing flight testing. Designed to be air-launched from the Quarterhorse uncrewed aircraft at Mach 3, Ramjet-X is expected to reach altitudes of 100,000 feet and cruise near Mach 4. Hermeus intends to market this as ‘high-Mach Flight Test as a Service’ for customers testing sensors, autonomy, and propulsion.

In a separate expansion of its operations, Hermeus signed a production license agreement with Pratt & Whitney to manufacture the F100-PW-229 fighter jet engine. This engine, used in F-15 and F-16 aircraft, will power the Quarterhorse family of unmanned aircraft. This move aims to bolster the United States defense industrial base by providing an additional production source. Hermeus is also developing a proprietary ‘Chimera’ engine that combines a precooled F100 engine with a ramjet.
