Hessen hospital landscape restructuring

Overview

Statistical data from the Hessian State Statistical Office indicates a long-term contraction in the Hessen hospital landscape between 1990 and 2024. During this period, the number of hospitals and available beds each decreased by approximately 20 percent. However, the total number of treated cases rose by roughly 21 percent, leading to a 51 percent increase in the number of cases per hospital bed. This trend is largely attributed to a 45 percent reduction in the average length of patient stays.

In response to these shifts and federal reform goals, the Hessian Ministry of Health has initiated a restructuring plan to centralize specialized medical services. The plan aims to concentrate specific procedures at fewer, highly qualified locations to improve treatment quality. For instance, pancreatic procedures are slated to be reduced from 23 to 15 locations, and ovarian cancer treatments from 28 to 15. While specialized elective surgeries will be centralized, officials stated that emergency care, maternity services, and pediatric medicine will remain accessible across all regions. A hearing process for clinics is underway, with the new structure intended to be fully operational by 2027.
