Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has consistently maintained that armed resistance is the only viable method for liberating Lebanese land and supporting the Palestinian cause. He also emphasized that the Lebanese Army should function as a national institution rather than a tool for external interests. More recently, Qassem has called for a freeze on direct negotiations with Israel, accusing Lebanese authorities of aiding Israeli interests and conceding too much power. He argued that previous negotiation rounds yielded results ‘below zero’ and urged a transition to indirect negotiations to safeguard sovereignty. Addressing a crowd of tens of thousands during a commemoration for the assassinated Hassan Nasrallah, Qassem asserted that Israel has failed to break the group’s resistance or end its existence. This comes amid significant conflict in 2026, which Beirut authorities report has caused over 4,300 deaths and massive displacement. Despite these hostilities, a June framework agreement under United States auspices outlines a plan for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon, contingent upon disarmament.
