Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has initiated several development and economic reform programs aimed at state self-reliance. In Mandi, the Chief Minister inaugurated 21 projects worth Rs 136.25 crore, covering road infrastructure, water supply, and public facilities such as health and veterinary centers. During these activities, Sukhu addressed the state’s fiscal challenges, alleging that the previous administration left the state in a debt trap. He noted that the Central Government withheld approximately Rs 1,600 crore in financial assistance following the decision to restore the Old Pension Scheme. Expanding on this vision, Sukhu outlined a strategic roadmap to make Himachal Pradesh one of India’s wealthiest states by 2032, with a specific goal of becoming the nation’s leader in healthcare by 2030. This plan, termed “Vyavastha Parivartan” (systemic change), focuses on education, the rural economy, and social security. To address healthcare needs, the administration is prioritizing infrastructure and staffing, aiming to reach full medical personnel requirements by March 31, 2027. Recent updates indicate that staffing levels in medical colleges, such as the Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla, have risen from 35 percent to 60 percent of required personnel. The government aims to reach 70 percent staffing by 2027. Further economic initiatives include a plan to invest between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 crore over five years to boost high-end tourism, including Rs 3,000 crore for the expansion of Kangra airport. Social welfare efforts have expanded to include a housing assistance scheme providing Rs 3 lakh to eligible Valmiki community families. Additionally, Sukhu has requested the Central Government to establish a Himachal Scouts Battalion to enhance defense preparedness in border districts.
