Overview

Following directives from the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs to transition from response-oriented measures to “risk-informed planning and preventive mitigation,” Himalayan states are intensifying efforts to monitor glacial lakes and avalanche-prone areas.

In Uttarakhand, the government has begun installing sensor-based early warning systems to mitigate Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risks. The Central Building Research Institute and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing are expected to implement monitoring mechanisms at Vasundhara Tal in the Chamoli district. Officials stated that data from this site will guide the deployment of systems at other high-risk locations.

While 13 glacial lakes in Uttarakhand have been classified as potentially dangerous, reports indicate a persistent gap between risk identification and the implementation of protective measures. The initiative aims to strengthen surveillance and alert dissemination to local communities across the region.
