An avalanche at the Himlung Himal base camp in Nepal’s Manang district has resulted in a significant loss of life. While initial reports indicated at least four deaths and between 10 and 14 missing persons, the death toll has since risen to 15. According to Tul Singh Gurung, president of the Nepal Mountain Guides Association, rescue teams recovered eight additional bodies, bringing the total confirmed fatalities to 15. Of the 16 people present at the camp—all Nepalese mountain guides and support staff preparing for the autumn climbing season—only one person remains missing. Rescue operations led by the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association faced severe obstacles due to heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions at the altitude leading toward the 7,126-meter summit. Rescuers were required to dig through more than four metres of snow to reach the site. Due to ongoing mountain hazards, recovery efforts have been temporarily concluded. This incident is noted as potentially one of the deadliest mountaineering disasters in Nepal in over a decade. decade, with reports comparing the scale of the tragedy to the 2014 Everest avalanche and the 2015 earthquake-triggered disaster. The disaster occurs amidst a broader period of extreme weather in the region. The Manang district has experienced floods and landslides, and the event follows devastating glacial floods and landslides that impacted various parts of the country in August.
