Historical Preservation and religious site preservation traditions in Lima

Religious and historical sites in Lima are undergoing preservation efforts. The Metropolitan Municipality of Lima and the Franciscan Province of the XII Apostles of Peru have entered an agreement to restore the Capilla del Milagro, located near the San Francisco Convent. The project, managed by PROLIMA, involves a full diagnostic to address the building’s structure, facade, and interior, including the recovery of liturgical ornaments and artworks. Separately, the historical mural of the Señor de los Milagros at the Santuario de las Nazarenas has been subject to various restorations over centuries. Originally a 17th-century painting on an adobe wall, the mural gained religious prominence after surviving major earthquakes in 1655 and 1687. Modern interventions have been required to protect the work from deterioration, including the replacement of the original adobe wall. On October 18, 2026, the sacred image of the Señor de los Milagros participated in its second procession through Lima’s historic center. A notable event during the procession was the image’s entry into the Government Palace, marking its first visit to the presidential seat in 40 years. President Keiko Fujimori, alongside Prime Minister Luis Galarreta and Cabinet members, received the image in the Patio de Honor. The procession also included visits to the Lima Municipality, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Congress of the Republic. In the Plaza Mayor, the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima honored the image with elaborate floral carpets made of flowers, sawdust, and grains.
