Historical indecent assault trial in County Clare

Overview

A 92-year-old man faced trial at Ennis Circuit Court regarding eight counts of indecently assaulting two orphan girls in his care between July 1973 and January 1975. During the proceedings, it was noted that the accused had previously paid a €70,000 civil settlement in November 2024, though defense counsel stated this was reached without an admission of liability.

A unanimous jury subsequently found the man guilty of all eight counts. The victims, two sisters now in their early 60s, provided evidence during the five-day trial from the US and Canada. The court noted the accused has a prior conviction from 1985 for the indecent assault of a 13-year-old boy. State counsel indicated the accused may be remanded on bail pending sentencing to allow for the gathering of medical documentation.
