Investigations of 1939 wartime events continue

Overview

Historical investigations and archaeological efforts continue to document events related to the 1939 invasion of Poland.

In Lviv, Ukraine, the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) has concluded exhumations at a former cemetery in the Holosko Wielkie area. The operation recovered the remains of 115 Polish soldiers who died defending the city in September 1939. Investigators also secured approximately 2,900 items, such as helmets, bayonets, and religious objects. The remains of 18 German soldiers were also discovered and transferred to the German organization Volksbund. Efforts are now focused on site restoration, locating families for DNA identification, and organizing funerals.

Commemorations in Grodno highlight the spontaneous defense of the city against Soviet aggression between September 20 and 22, 1939. Defenders, including soldiers, police, and civilians, used improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails to stall Soviet armored units. The resistance included significant participation from youth, such as 13-year-old scout Tadeusz Jasiński.

In Głowno, researchers led by the KPE Eksplorer Association and descendant Łukasz Łukasik are searching for the execution site of 11 Ziewanice residents murdered on September 12, 1939. While the exact mass grave location remains unconfirmed, the search near a railway embankment has yielded Mauser rifle cartridges and casings.
