History of Korean Catholic martyrdom

Overview

The history of the Catholic Church in Korea is marked by early growth and significant religious persecution. The movement began around 1782 when Ni-Tek-tso, also known as Peter, returned from China to spread the faith, leading to a community of approximately 4,000 members by 1794.

During the 19th century, the community faced three major periods of persecution that resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 Christians. A central figure in this history is Andrés Kim Dae-geon, the first Korean Catholic priest, who was a missionary, cartographer, and navigator. Kim was ordained while imprisoned and was subsequently martyred in Seoul. His father, Giuseppe, was also killed after being baptized by his son in prison.

In 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Andrés Kim, Giuseppe, and 101 other Korean martyrs to mark the second centenary of the Korean Catholic Church. Recent cultural interest in this history includes the release of the film ‘Nacimiento’, which chronicles Kim’s life and his journeys through Macau and Vladivostok.
