History of Saint Bruno and the Carthusian Order

Overview

Saint Bruno of Cologne, an 11th-century theologian and educator, founded the Carthusian Order after renouncing ecclesiastical positions in Reims due to his opposition to simony.

After settling in the Chartreuse mountains near Grenoble in 1084, Bruno established a monastic tradition centered on silence, prayer, and manual labor. He later founded another monastery in Calabria, Italy. The Carthusian Order is characterized by a unique spiritual model of ‘being together in solitude,’ combining eremitic and communal life forms.
