History of the yellow smiley face symbol

Overview

The history of the iconic yellow smiley face symbol traces back to 1963, when American designer Harvey Ball was commissioned by the State Mutual Life Assurance Company in Worcester, Massachusetts. Tasked with creating an image to boost employee morale during corporate changes, Ball produced the design—consisting of a yellow circle, two black dots, and a curve—in less than ten minutes.

Because neither Ball nor the company registered the design, the symbol achieved massive global reach through commercial products, posters, and buttons. While the image became a staple of popular culture and was later commercialized by others, Ball did not receive the financial benefits associated with its widespread use. The symbol is also tied to the celebration of World Smile Day, held on the first Friday of October.
