H&M reported third-quarter operating profits for the period ending in August that exceeded analyst expectations. The company posted an operating profit of 6.04 billion Swedish krona, surpassing the consensus forecast of 5.27 billion krona. While revenue and sales grew by only 1 percent in local currencies, profitability was bolstered by improved margins, cost-cutting measures, and tariff-related benefits. Despite these gains, the company faces headwinds including logistics disruptions in Europe, rising transport costs, and consumer hesitation driven by the cost-of-living crisis. Recent reporting on the three months ending August 31 shows sales of SEK 57.2 billion, a 1 percent year-on-year increase. Although sales in Swedish krona remained relatively flat due to a stronger currency impacting the value of overseas earnings, the Asia, Oceania, and Africa region experienced 4 percent growth in local currencies. Chief Executive Daniel Ervér attributed the sales improvement as the summer progressed to a “well-received summer collection.” Looking forward, H&M anticipates pressure on procurement costs in the fourth fiscal quarter and expects increased promotional activity. The retailer is also planning to optimize its physical footprint by opening approximately 90 new stores and closing around 170 existing locations throughout 2026.
