This follows an insolvency filing in June 2026 prompted by rising production costs and declining beer sales in the German market. An unsuccessful search for investors during insolvency proceedings has made the production shutdown appear certain, though discussions regarding the potential survival of the Wolters brand under new ownership continue. As the closure date approaches, the food and beverage union, NGG, has begun advocating against a total shutdown of the nearly 400-year-old facility. The union has proposed a cooperative business model to preserve both the site and jobs, noting that approximately 560,000 euros has already been pledged via internet platforms. The brewery’s situation is part of broader industrial shifts in Europe, such as the planned phase-out of production at the footwear manufacturer Baťa’s remaining manufacturing plant in the Czech Republic during 2027. Similar insolvency-driven closures are affecting other German manufacturers, including the Kahla porcelain manufacturer in Thuringia, which faces a shutdown by the end of 2026, and the Eichbaum brewery in Mannheim, which has already halted production, resulting in approximately 180 job losses.
