Danish tennis player Holger Rune is continuing his return to professional competition following an 11-month absence caused by a left Achilles tendon rupture sustained in late 2025. After skipping the US Open to prioritize recovery, Rune successfully debuted in the Davis Cup World Group I tie against Bulgaria, securing two points with victories over Iliyan Radulov and Grigor Dimitrov. His performance helped Denmark secure a 3-2 win, qualifying the team for the 2027 finals. As he transitioned into the Asian swing of the ATP tour, Rune faced challenges in rebuilding match rhythm, suffering first-round losses in Tokyo against Kyrian Jacquet and in Shanghai against Daniel Altmaier. Although Rune was awarded a wild card for the European Open in Brussels to assist his comeback, he withdrew from the tournament due to a back injury, reporting on social media that his back had ‘seized up.’ Medical scans indicated the issue was not serious and required only two to three days of rest. Following this setback, Rune secured his first victory in the main ATP tour cycle at the ATP 500 tournament in Basel, defeating Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(5). This win at the Swiss Indoors marks a significant milestone, representing his first individual victory on the ATP Tour since being sidelined for 373 days following his tendon rupture in Stockholm.
