In late July 2026, Austria’s main routes experienced severe holiday‑season traffic jams. The Karawanken Autobahn (A11) near the Karawanken Tunnel in Carinthia saw a 7‑9 km queue, while Tyrol’s Fernpass road (B179) and the Inntal Autobahn (A12) at the German border faced 15‑20 minute delays. Ongoing construction near the Herzogberg Tunnel in Styria added a six‑kilometre backup, and an accident on the Brenner Autobahn (A22) near Neumarkt in South Tyrol created a 13‑km jam. Two weeks later, similar disruptions were reported on Italy’s highway network. A multi‑vehicle collision on the A10 between Spotorno and Orco Feglino injured six people, while a heavy‑vehicle fire on the A14 near Roseto degli Abruzzi caused a ten‑kilometre queue. By early August, Italian transportation disruptions intensified. A fatal five-vehicle accident on the A14 between Faenza and Forlì killed a 67-year-old woman and injured 10 people. Other disruptions included bridge closures in Monza, delays on the A27, and heavy congestion in Puglia due to nearly 2.5 million transits. As the summer travel period continued into mid-August, Italy saw a rise in fatal and serious accidents across multiple regions. In the Vibonense region, a three-car collision near Zambrone resulted in one death and two injuries, followed by a crash in Briatico that left a motorcyclist in a coma. In the Foggiano area, a van carrying agricultural workers overturned in Serracapriola, causing one death and eight injuries. Additional fatalities were reported involving a motocross rider in Camposampiero and a cyclist in the Santa Maria del Giogo area, alongside a crash on the Domiziana road in Campania. Further incidents included a burning truck on the A20 near Brolo, a multi-vehicle crash on the A29 near Torretta, and a collision involving a stolen scooter in Gudo Visconti.
