As the holiday season approaches, financial guidance focuses on managing seasonal expenses to avoid debt. Early strategies emphasize calculating total estimated costs for gifts, food, and travel, then dividing those totals into weekly savings targets. Recent consumer data indicates significant financial pressure, with 47% of Americans reporting stress regarding holiday affordability. Rising costs are impacting early seasonal preparations, specifically Halloween. Confectionery prices have surged due to supply shocks in cocoa, sugar, and corn syrup caused by extreme weather and droughts. In the United States, confectionery prices rose 7.7% between September 2025 and September 2026, more than double the 3.7% overall inflation rate. Canada has seen similar trends, with a 6.5% annual increase in confectionery goods exceeding its 3% inflation rate. A primary driver is the record high in global cocoa prices, which reached $10,710 per metric ton in early 2025. These inflationary pressures have led to a decline in Halloween candy sales in the U.S. NielsenIQ reported a 6.7% drop in sales for the month ending October 17 compared to the previous year, following an even sharper 11.7% decline in mid-September. Analysts attribute this slump to high living costs, including elevated prices for fuel, housing, and food; notably, gasoline prices rose nearly 40% year-over-year. Chris Costagli, a vice president at NielsenIQ, noted that consumers are prioritizing other necessities over seasonal treats. While small bags of candy have seen some sales growth, large and extra-large bags have faced the most significant declines. Beyond cocoa, rising costs for packaging materials like aluminum and plastic, and increased diesel prices for shipping, have contributed to higher retail prices. In the U.S., candy and gum prices have risen 44% over a five-year period. Consumers are reacting by shifting toward smaller candy bags, salty snacks, or ‘buy now, pay later’ services. Deloitte’s 2026 Holiday Retail Survey predicts average U.S. household spending will reach $1,654, a 4% increase from the previous year.
