On October 25, 2026, human remains were discovered in sacks in the Rhine river near Stein, Switzerland. The discovery began when three individuals found a bag containing a human leg in the water. Subsequent searches by police using divers and boats uncovered additional body parts contained in waste bags both in the river and near the riverbank. Authorities identified the deceased as a 33-year-old man from Burundi who had been reported missing from a local asylum seeker center on October 24. By October 27, police arrested a 43-year-old man from Bangladesh in connection with the case. The suspect was a roommate of the victim at the asylum shelter. Prosecutors have launched a homicide investigation, noting that while motives are currently unclear, there is no evidence to suggest the crime was motivated by religion or politics. Investigators are examining whether the suspect’s reported psychological issues were a factor. Following a large-scale search of the asylum facility and the surrounding area, authorities secured evidence that strengthened the suspicion against the roommate. The public prosecutor has requested pre-trial detention for the suspect.
