Homophobic attacks in Italy
Overview
Reports have emerged regarding violent homophobic attacks in Italy. In Vigevano, a 24-year-old Salvadoran man died following an assault on August 21, 2026. Investigative documents indicate that two men insulted the victim regarding his sexual orientation and pushed him into the Naviglio Sforzesco canal. Although he initially escaped the water, he later succumbed to the consequences of the attack.
In a separate incident in Bologna, two 29-year-old men were targeted in the Porta Mascarella area. The assault reportedly began with verbal insults directed at the pair for holding hands and escalated into a physical attack by a group of approximately 15 to 20 individuals. One victim required medical treatment for head injuries at Sant’Orsola hospital.
The victims described the attackers as being of foreign origin, though police have not yet identified the suspects. The Carabinieri are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime and are reviewing surveillance footage. The Bologna municipality has announced it will join the victims as a civil party in legal proceedings. Regional and local leaders, including Emilia-Romagna President Michele de Pascale and Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore, have condemned the act as “unacceptable” and “cowardly,” describing it as an attempt to intimidate the queer community. Officials have emphasized a commitment to strengthening regional laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
