Honda is expanding the availability and off-road capabilities of its Passport SUV in both the United States and Japan. Initially, the company announced plans to import the Passport to the Japanese market in the second half of 2026, utilizing a new certification system for US-made passenger vehicles. This expansion includes the high-end TrailSport Elite trim, which features a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 285 horsepower and a second-generation i-VTM4 torque vectoring four-wheel-drive system. The vehicle is noted for its large dimensions, with a width exceeding two meters. Following these announcements, Honda officially released the 2027 Passport TrailSport and TrailSport Elite models. These vehicles feature a significant mechanical overhaul, with approximately 70 percent of the suspension components—including springs, dampers, and control arms—being arms, and stabilizer bars—being redesigned. These upgrades increase ground clearance to 9.65 inches, a gain of 1.38 inches over the previous model, and improve approach, departure, and breakover angles. The redesign also moves toward a more muscular, boxy aesthetic with a bold grille, integrated LED lighting, and pronounced fender flares. Off-road enhancements include a locking rear differential, reinforced underbody protection, dedicated rock and sand drive modes, and the option for 31-inch all-terrain tires. New technology features include the TrailWatch 360-degree camera system and standard heated steering wheels for TrailSport trims. The vehicles are manufactured at the Honda Alabama Auto Plant, with the TrailSport Elite scheduled for introduction to the Japanese market in early 2027.
