Honda, in collaboration with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec Corporation, is developing a dynamic wireless charging road system designed to power electric vehicles (EVs) while they are in motion. The technology uses magnetic coupling, with power-transmitting units embedded in the road surface and a receiver unit installed on the vehicle. Technical responsibilities are distributed among the partners: Honda is developing high-power transmission and reception equipment, Taisei is managing the direct current power supply infrastructure, and Taisei Rotec is focusing on integrating hardware into the road surface. A key innovation involves using compact modules for the inverter and coil to reduce installation complexity and maintenance needs. Initial development has validated that the road structure can withstand weights of approximately 20 tonnes, supporting both passenger cars and large commercial vehicles. As part of the development timeline, the partners plan to conduct long-term durability testing and performance experiments at specialized facilities in Saitama and Fukushima prefectures starting in late 2026. Public road demonstrations in Japan are scheduled to begin in the 2027 fiscal year on a 300-metre stretch of motorway in Chiba Prefecture, part of the ‘Tateyama Project’ led by NEXCO East. These trials will initially target the logistics and transportation sectors, specifically commercial trucks, with the capability of delivering up to 150 kW of power to vehicles traveling at speeds of 120 km/h. Toyota is also expected to participate in testing a 300-meter section of the Tateyama Expressway. Honda intends to eventually expand the technology to its electric SUV lineup. By enabling charging during transit, the system seeks to reduce reliance on stationary charging, address charging anxiety, and allow for smaller, lighter, and more affordable vehicle batteries.
