Honda‑GAC China joint venture extension
Entities: Lin Zhibin · GAC Group · GAC Honda · Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
Overview
Honda Motor China and Guangzhou Automobile Group renewed their 50‑50 GAC Honda joint venture on 20 July 2026, extending it to 2038. The renewal follows a steep sales slump – first‑half‑2026 sales fell 55.8 % YoY to 68,318 units and cumulative Chinese sales have dropped about 60 % since 2020. Honda labelled 2026 a “hibernation” year, cutting under‑performing projects and preparing three China‑specific models for 2027: a gasoline vehicle, a fifth‑generation i‑MMD hybrid and a pure‑electric or plug‑in hybrid, all to feature Huawei’s HarmonyOS cabin system and advanced driver‑assist technologies.
At the same time, CEO Toshihiro Mibe signalled that Honda is weighing a fourth assembly plant in North America to add capacity and buffer supply‑chain risks, while confirming no new European investments. The extension also supports the upcoming Lexus TX MPV/SUV for the Chinese market.
In early August, GAC Honda announced a localisation drive that will see five new models launched within two years, including an updated hybrid line and two China‑origin NEVs developed jointly. The plan gives a China‑based team product‑definition authority, raises the share of domestic components, expands the dealer network and invests in digital talent to improve speed and cost efficiency.
Overall, Honda is reinforcing its China foothold through deeper R&D collaboration, a refreshed model pipeline and a localisation strategy, while also expanding production capacity in its key growth markets.
