Honduran foreign policy and diplomatic tensions

Following a shift in foreign policy by the newly elected Honduran administration, diplomatic tensions have emerged with Russia and China. Allegations have surfaced regarding the previous government’s use of foreign staff from Russia, China, and Venezuela within the central government complex in Tegucigalpa. Specifically, officials linked to the former administration, including individuals associated with Russia’s RT and China’s Xinhua, were allegedly involved in the surveillance of opposition figures.

Concurrently, the Honduran National Congress has faced calls for an investigation into the entry of over 13,000 Chinese citizens. Legislators have raised concerns regarding potential influence peddling and irregular immigration payments. While the National Institute of Migration reported that the influx of Chinese nationals—primarily for tourism, business, and transit—remains “balanced” with most individuals departing the country, the annual number of arrivals has seen a significant increase since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
