Tomás Zambrano, President of the National Congress of Honduras, has been engaged in various national initiatives involving data collection and regional development. In August, Zambrano called for public cooperation with the XVIII National Population and VII Housing Census, which is the first such census in 13 years. He characterized the process as a “vital tool for national development” and urged citizens to disregard rumors intended to cause distrust. By September, Zambrano’s focus expanded to a working tour through the Lempira department to coordinate social development and infrastructure projects. During this tour, he committed to improving water access, health, and education services in municipalities such as Tambla. He also addressed a drought crisis affecting over 100 municipalities, noting that coordination with ministers and mayors is underway to provide relief. In September 2026, Zambrano continued these regional tours to address infrastructure, social, and security needs. In Lempira, he announced investment projects for Tambla, Valladolid, and Tomalá, including support for water, roads, and health services in Tambla, and the remodeling of the El Cerrito tourist area in Tomalá. In Yoro, development plans for Olanchito include the replacement of 1,200 electric poles through 2028 and upcoming tenders for the Tourist Corridor highway and the Eddie Acosta boulevard. During his visit to Olanchito, deputies also provided 350,000 lempiras in donations to support local agriculture and livestock producers. Concurrently, national statistics report significant social challenges, including 1,403 traffic fatalities between January and September 2026, with motorcyclists accounting for over 42% of deaths. Additionally, reports indicate 729 minors disappeared between 2022 and August 2025, while violent deaths of women have risen by approximately 8% compared to the previous year.
