Honduran public health spending investigations

Honduran legislative leaders have called for investigations into public health expenditures, specifically targeting the alleged overvaluation of the Ocotepeque hospital construction. Legislative President Tomás Zambrano indicated that the government is awaiting reports from auditing bodies and the Public Ministry to determine further action.

Simultaneously, scrutiny has intensified regarding a government pilot program designed to reduce surgical backlogs by utilizing private medical centers. Data from the Institute for Access to Public Information (IAIP) shows that between March and July 2024, the state paid 26.2 million lempiras for 405 procedures. Critics, including Deputy Carlos Umaña, allege the state is paying approximately 50% more than market rates for certain surgeries.

Financial records indicate that funding for these contracts originated from Casa Presidencial, with the highest spending concentrated in Francisco Morazán, Atlántida, and Cortés. Concerns have been raised regarding the long-term sustainability of this model, as applying current average costs to the remaining 10,000 patients on waiting lists could result in expenditures reaching 650 million lempiras.
